Barrett Hazeltine Entrepreneurial Mentorship Award Ceremony & Reception

Professor Barrett Hazeltine has been mentoring and inspiring Brown University students for decades. In honor of his dedication to student mentoring, and in particular, his mentorship of aspiring entrepreneurs, a group of alumni came together to start the Barrett Hazeltine Entrepreneurial Mentoring Award.

On April 29 we honor two mentors who embody Professor Hazeltine’s mentorship, having a tremendous impact on young entrepreneurial minds at Brown University. This year we are excited to announce two winners! Jessica Kim ’00 and Kris Brown ’89 have both been generous with their time mentoring Brown students and have been instrumental in Brown students’ success.

Jessica Kim ’00 is the co-founder of ianacare, a virtual care team for caregivers. This new venture was sparked by her experience being a full-time caregiver for her mom battling cancer. At the age of 19, she started Jessica’s Wonders, a baked goods company, out of her college dorm room. She raised $1M in funding her senior year (with braces) and grew it to national distribution. From there, she worked at Kraft Foods in brand management. In 2008, Jessica founded BabbaCo to invest in the future of parenting by helping families spend quality time together through subscription activity boxes. BabbaCo was acquired in 2014 by Barefoot Books, where she served as President for two years. Jessica is also the inaugural Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) at Brown University and an advisor to several startups. Jessica graduated from Brown University and received her MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

Kris Brown ’89, is a corporate law partner at Goodwin Procter LLP in New York City, is a tech and life sciences-focused angel investor, and entrepreneur. Kris advises global and domestic clients, like the corporate venture arm of Johnson & Johnson, and has since an early age also personally invested in and started companies, many of which are based around the world — from Israel to Singapore to London to Brooklyn. Kris serves on the board of advisors for Venture for America. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from Brown with a degree in Applied Mathematics and Economics and graduated from Boston University School of Law in 1992. He comes back to campus quite frequently to mentor students, and even from NYC, he lends his expertise to students at Brown.
